Formally referred to as the ATAPS program, the Short-Term Therapies (STT) program provides access to effective, free treatment for people with mild to moderate mental illness, such as depression and anxiety, who may not otherwise be able to access Medicare-subsidised mental health services. The SST Program offers up to six sessions with a Psychologist/Mental Health Professional and further 4 sessions on GP approval.
The Short-Term Therapies program (formerly ATAPS) is funded by the Northern Territory Primary Health Network and Psych Solutions NT has been a pivotal psychological treatment provider since 2013.

As with other programs, the referral process for Short Term Therapies begins with your GP. This will involve a brief discussion of your mental health concerns and other eligibility considerations which includes an inability to afford services via Medicare’s Better Access program. The STT referral and accompanying Mental Health Care Plan will be forwarded to the Triage Service run by Catholic Care who will then refer to on one of the STT Providers. If you are specifically requesting the services of Psych Solutions NT or one of our Practitioners please make sure the GP states that on the referral form.
Once your referral is accepted and processed by Catholic Care it will be forwarded to us to allocate accordingly and one of our Practitioners will be in touch with you either via phone or text to set up an initial appointment.
If a client has received therapy under the program previously however re-presents with a different issue, and would benefit from short term therapy, they are considered eligible for re-referral.
Please note: clients presenting with multiple or complex needs who require longer term therapy should be referred to alternative services. More information @ www.mentalhealthnt.com.au/ or www.healthdirect.gov.au
Both programs provide primary mental health care and treatment, the Better Access Initiative is Medicare funded whereas funding for the Short Term Therapies program is provided by the NT Primary Health Network. The latter program is specifically targeted towards ensuring services to those who face difficulties in accessing services, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, those experiencing homelessness, young people, and those in remote and rural locations. Referrals to Short Term Therapies are only for those who cannot afford to access psychological services under available Medicare initiatives such as Better Access.
